The sixth and final 2019 Democratic debate is nine days away and the field of bona fide presidential hopefuls is narrowing. Six candidates have officially qualified this time around but there are four clear cut frontrunners who have emerged as legitimate top-tier candidates. I like Amy Klobuchar and Tom Steyer but I’ve never seen Amy Klobuchar in a presidential light and I’m reserving judgement on Tom Steyer for now until I know more about him and his campaign. Today it’s all about the fearsome foursome of former Vice President Joe Biden, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, and openly gay Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
I know there are other possible candidates floating around out there and with the departure Senator Kamala Harris last week the path forward is still murky at best. This is why we have a primary process and nationally televised debates to help us cull and prune away until we have a nominee. Joe Biden is ahead in all of the major polls and as former Vice President to the last Democratic President, Barack Obama, he represents success at the highest level. I think his experience is a big plus, especially when it comes to actually governing and running the country. I don’t think I worry as much about his public gaffes as much as other might. Preferably we would want a candidate that isn’t as prone to putting his foot in his mouth so much but I also think that’s part of what makes him Joe. He’s human, he’s imperfect, he’s real…for better or worse.
Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are darlings of the liberal left, and this is a growing part of the Democratic party, but I worry. I support many of their policies and ideas but I wonder if they can get enough votes from moderates and independents to unseat Trump in 2020. I think they represent our best hopes to mount an offensive against income inequality and corporate greed. They might be what we need in this country today. They might be what we have needed in this country yesterday. Rounding out the Fearsome Foursome is openly gay South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg. I’m continually amazed and impressed at how far he has risen in the polls and the level of popular support he has. I think he has a once in a generation mind, does a masterful job of communicating his ideas, and makes me proud to be a gay American.
