Outgoing South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg made an appearance on MSNBC and The Rachel Maddow Show this week. I watched the 27-minute interview last night live and I wanted to pass it along. I’m continually and progressively impressed with him and I’m really taking note of the entire Pete for America campaign. This interview was of particular note to me because it came amidst a new wave of criticism of the openly gay candidate for president. He took some heat this week and over the weekend for his health care plan, some consulting work did that was protected by a NDA, and his decision to not allow press at some of high dollar fundraisers.
I’m actually a big fan of his health care proposals. I don’t think it’s a good idea to throw everyone off their private plans in lieu of a national MediCal plan. I believe health care for all should definitely be the goal but I think it would be disastrous to force everyone off private insurance plans and move them over to an untried and untested plan all at once at the very get-go. I think giving people the option to stay with the plan they have but also offering a national healthcare option is a much safer and saner way to go. I was also a big fan of his decision to abide by the terms of the non-disclosure agreement he signed in his corporate consulting career. I know the hard Left doesn’t agree with me but I would much rather have a leader in the White House who will stand by his word even when it’s not good politics to do so.
