Pete Buttigieg sworn in as U.S. Secretary of Transportation

Former South Bend, Indiana mayor and U.S. presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg has been sworn in as U.S. Secretary of Transportation. He is the first openly gay secretary in our nation’s history. V.P. Kamala Harris administered the oath of office and his husband, Chase, held the bible.

Gay rights activist and political pioneer Harvey D. Milk used to say, “The number one enemy of gay people anywhere, anytime is being invisible.” The historic life and career of Secretary Pete has already been such a positive and powerful force for LGBTQ people everywhere. We will always welcome straight allies and leaders who are sympathetic to the cause of equality but I firmly believer that LGBTQ leaders will always serve our community and fight more effectively.
