Why Are We Paying Bar Prices for the Easiest Cocktail on Earth?

Let’s talk about the Jack & Coke — the world’s simplest mixed drink. It’s literally whiskey and cola. No muddling, no shaking, no artisanal bitters blessed by a forest witch. Just pour, top, sip. And yet, depending on where you go, this two‑ingredient drink can cost anywhere from $6 (hello, Applebee’s) to $12 (clubs), and even $18 at places like Quail State. Eighteen dollars. For a shot of Jack Daniel’s and some soda.

Meanwhile, the official Jack Daniel’s & Coca‑Cola canned cocktail — the one you’ve probably seen in stores — runs about $3.17 per can, and here’s the kicker: each can is 7% ABV, which works out to about 1.4 shots of whiskey. It’s literally stronger than what most bars pour. But the real savings show up when you make it at home. A 1.75L handle of Jack Daniel’s is about $35, which sounds like a lot until you realize that’s the price of two bar drinks at a trendy spot. That handle gives you 39 shots, and when you pair it with cola — whether it’s Coca‑Cola or my personal favorite, Sam’s Cola Zero Sugar (half the price and honestly better) — your total cost per drink comes out to roughly $1.00–$1.30.

That’s it. One dollar and change for the exact same cocktail you’d pay $12–$18 for in public. So when people say cocktails are expensive, let’s be honest: bars are expensive. The drink isn’t. If you like Jack & Coke, you have absolutely no excuse not to make it at home. It’s cheaper, stronger, and tastes exactly the same — unless you’re into the ambiance of paying triple digits for a night out, in which case, live your truth. But for the rest of us, a handle of Jack, a bottle of cola, and you’re set for weeks.
