After a week of public pressure, employee organizing, and more than 14,000 people taking action through the Human Rights Campaign, Philz Coffee has reversed course. What began as a deeply troubling decision to remove Pride flags from all stores has now become a reminder of how quickly communities can mobilize—and how powerful that collective response can be. Below is the HRC’s full update.
After more than 14,000 supporters joined the Human Rights Campaign’s call to action, Philz Coffee CEO Mahesh Sadarangani has apologized and reinstated Pride flags at all Philz locations. The reversal comes just days after the April 9, 2026 announcement that Pride flags would be removed from every store nationwide, a move the company framed as part of a “streamlined aesthetic” meant to maintain a welcoming environment for all customers.
The Human Rights Campaign rejected that justification outright, noting that removing Pride flags does not create a more welcoming space—it creates a less safe one. For years, those rainbow flags have served as a visible promise to LGBTQ+ customers, employees, and community members that Philz Coffee is a place where they belong. The decision to remove them landed at a particularly dangerous moment, as LGBTQ+ rights across the country face unprecedented political attacks. When businesses that once stood with the community suddenly go silent, it sends a chilling message: that LGBTQ+ visibility is negotiable, that safety is a branding choice, and that corporate interests outweigh civil rights.
Philz employees were the first to speak out. Thousands signed a petition describing how the decision left them feeling “confounded and unsupported.” In response, HRC mobilized members, allies, and the broader public to demand accountability. On April 17, 2026, CEO Sadarangani reversed the policy, issued a public apology, and reinstated Pride flags at all Philz Coffee locations. This outcome demonstrates the power of collective action and the ability of communities to hold corporations accountable when LGBTQ+ visibility is threatened.
Thank you for doing the right thing.
Dear Philz Coffee CEO Mr. Sadarangani and all Philz Coffee employees,
On behalf of the Human Rights Campaign and the more than 14,000 supporters who joined our call to action, thank you. Thank you for listening. Thank you for reversing your decision. And thank you for publicly acknowledging what our community has always known: “The Pride flag is a symbol of safety and belonging for people who don’t always find that in the world.”
