Showing up as my true, authentic self every day

Have you heard my coming out story? I first came out in college. Back then, I worried that living my authentic life openly would mean giving up any chance of running for office one day.

Turns out, I didn’t have to choose. I watched people across our LGBTQ+ community show real courage — coming out, living openly, being public about who they are. They showed me I could do both: run for office, and be honest about who I am.

Because of that support and those acts of courage, I became the first openly gay U.S. Senator in our nation’s history. But I didn’t run to make history. I ran to make a difference for Wisconsinites.

And that’s exactly what we’ve done — bolstering manufacturing, standing up for veterans, lowering prescription drug costs. I’ve gotten to do all of it while showing up as my true, authentic self, every single day.

I’m so grateful for the thousands of activists who have fought for representation. Together, we’re stronger. And together, we’re not done fighting yet.

In solidarity, Tammy
