Tammy Baldwin, “Happy Juneteenth!”

This holiday commemorates June 19th, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, declaring that enslaved people were finally free — over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. Now, Juneteenth is largely recognized as the nation’s second Independence Day.

This is a time to celebrate Black history, culture, leadership, and achievement, while also recognizing the challenges that remain. We must always strive for progress and do our utmost best to create an America where everyone is treated with dignity.

Today, I’m reflecting on the strength and resilience Black Americans have shown throughout our nation’s history — and recognizing that there’s still work ahead to move our country forward. As we celebrate Wisconsin’s Black communities, our commitment to justice, freedom, and equality for all remains as strong as ever.

Happy Juneteenth,

Tammy Baldwin
