A glittery nightclub in 1920s Berlin becomes a haven for the queer community in this documentary exploring the freedoms lost amid Hitler’s rise to power.

Eldorado was a an expansive, wildly popular LGBTQ+ night club in Berlin in the 1920’s. As you can imagine, this club would indeed be everything the Nazis would hate. Not only is this club quite revolutionary for what it is during the 1920s-1930s, but so was Berlin, Germany, which had an institute for the study of LGBTQ+ persons, with the goal to use science to work towards LGBTQ+ rights.

Unfortunately, this is right around the time Hitler starts to come into power. I’ve learned a number of surprising things in this film, and it was pretty sad, but amazing that there was once a vibrant LGBTQ+ community in the throes of Nazi Germany.
