It’s a scary time for the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary. Since Trump’s presidency, the enabling of radical conservative governments has resulted in greater levels of bigotry. Hungary’s latest atrocity was the passing of legislation that makes anything remotely LGBTQ+ related, including any topics on sexual orientation considered 18+. The EU has not been silent, thankfully. It was already taking on Poland’s LGBT “free” zones by reminding everyone of the EU’s core values, by declaring its entirety as a LGBTQ+ freedom zone, and sanctions.
Though both hateful countries are still persistent, the LGBTQ+ community is far more resilient. A pride march of over 30,000 people, including some members from Hungary’s government, and the support of several countries (most of the EU, Canada and the US) are protesting Hungary’s hatefulness.
